The transformation of old barns into homes It has become a trend in recent years in rural areas of Great Britain. These barns, which can be hundreds of years old, are sometimes a great challenge for architects and builders. But there is a basic rule to follow for the renovation to be successful: be faithful to the original construction, while retaining the essential character of the barn.
On this occasion we met a project carried out by Solidity, based on converting an open plan of an old barn into a bedroom with bathroom, using HI-MACS® as the main material and that with its style highly contemporary contrasts with the rustic of the ceiling beams.
With the intention of maintain the essence and personality of the old barn located in West Sussex, Solidity experts maintained those original ceiling and wall beams, some of which had been previously plastered, but at the same time implemented modern materials and solutions, to create a comfortable and functional bathroom tailored to today's needs .
Clearly the highlight of this reform is the contrast of the two characters faced, the rustic represented by the dark wood of the beams and the modern represented by the latest generation material in very bright white.
The result is a rustic and quiet space, but with all the comforts of a modern one. In the bathroom, the floor is totally impervious to moisture because the shower area is integrated in the center, fits without visible joints with half-height walls. HI-MACS® acrylic stone has also been used for the custom made washbasin as well as for the furniture and the front parts of the drawers, because after all everything is exposed to moisture.
The material of acrylic stone, which may surprise a priori in a reform like this, it was chosen for this bathroom for properties such as that it is easy to thermoform, its surface is not porous and is waterproof, it is easy to join, clean and maintain. And in view of the result we can say that it has been a success.
The truth is that in the images you can see how the final result is impressive and the visual contrast between the contemporary white of the lower area and the old upper part, characterized by the timeless oak, is a very inspiring mix of styles and that creates a really cozy atmosphere.
When one has the possibility of convert a space with as much personality as an old barn into housing, it must be very respectful with the most characteristic elements of it because in them lies its charm and the reform will be all the more spectacular the greater the contrasts between the rustic and ancient and the modern and avant-garde that coexist in the same space after the renewal.
